So, I've been completely pumped for quite some time--all of lastnight and today--planning on going sky diving this weekend. And then I got a phone call. I was informed that I would not be able to participate in this exhilarating activity until the weekend after Thanksgiving. I suppose it's all for the best. Now I can actually get set apart in my new calling. I can actually get caught up on some homework. I might even get some sleep! And ya know, it does always leave it open for more date opportunities. So, in the long run, it'll be a good thing.
It sure does put a damper on my excitement level, though...:) no worries...tomorrow is gonna be a good day!

I am finished!
Wow! what a summer! I must say this has been a life-lasting experience, and I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to come here. My big final examine was today and I think I did fairly well. :-) it has been hard but it has been so worth it!
so, that is my last Russian update, I think...I leave in just a few days so I am going to live in this city as much as I can until then...
-Nadya!

Russian Banya
Sorry for not writing or even sending pictures last week y'all...it's been crazy lately and I have so many people to write to and I want to tell y'all everything!!..
so to make up for it, here's the most "russian" experience I have had as of yet: A Russian Banya
thursday I went to the Russian banya: a bathhouse. let me say, I was a little anxious, because I had no idea what ot expect. I went with my neighbor, Galina, and my two friends, Aubree and Kristine. We had to wait in line, and yeah...so you go in, and it's basically a locker room. fine. and then you get undressed. lol. our neighbor was done and waiting for us before we were ready to go into the bath room. so we go in...and there are about 40 other women in there. all without clothes! haha..most of them are old, and so we weren't really that embarrassed. it was a little (quite) awkward at first, but once you realize that everyone is without clothes...it's really quite normal. and it's the first place I have felt the communicty that Russians always talk about, "we're so communal" "we're always sticking up for each other" "we just stick it through"..no, in their everyday lives its man eat man etc...so this was great, it was an equlizer!
first, you pick a bench that has a bucket and you fill up the bucket with scalding hot water and clean off your bench...you don't want somebody else's soap! and then you mix the hot/cold to get a comfortable temp...and then you leave it and go to the sauna room. it was ITNENSE! I couldn't sit down...imagine that...and then they started adding water to the coals and it got REALLY hot. I have never been singed in my life, but I could not breathe, and I could feel my skin like burning!! It was the most pianful thing I have experienced ina long while! my neighbro was like, come down, come down (it was like al oft)...and then you must know, that a tradition in banyas is to get beaten with birch branches...and this nice old babushka volunteered to do it for us. and she beat us. haha, it felt really good actually. a very good massage! and then she had us like turn around, put our arms up...haha...it was great.
next step, we go out to wash. got our water, got our soap, and shampoo. right, I can do this! and then I've washed and my neighbor is just beginning...so I end up washing about 3 times...and she told me to wash my hair again! lol...and then this old babuyska comes up to me and asks me to scrub her down...hahaha...talk about community! and then I rinsed her...and then we had a little conversation about russia and where I'm from and what kind of story this will be for my friends!! man, it was so grreat!! and then the same lady who beat us gave us some coffee to scrub with: a natural exfoliation! I can do that! and I think it really worked! I felt so smooth and clean afterwards!...anyway, then my neighbro wanted me to scrub her back...that's a lot of body: 70 plus...wow.
side note: some of the members of our group were so appled that we had gone to a banya (and apparently it was a ghetto one..I sbelaive it! It costs 10 rubles...that's less than 5o cents. ) beucase they couldn't handle being that familiar withe veryone. I really felt connected. it was great. so many ladies were so appreciative and tickled that we were at a bnya! I wanted to expeirence Russia and man did it1 they were so cute! " you need to come to a bnya at lest once a onth" "where are you from..molodetz! (that means good for you!)"
continuing: so, then you go to these showers to rinse it all off (after dumptin your individual bucket about 3 times over yourself...)...and then you gather up all your stuff and go get dressed. haha, yeah russia!! I love it! and it was great too becuase we still don't have hot water, so I"ve been doing little bucket cleansings anyway...a bnay was great! it took about an hour, and I'm not sure I'm ready to go bck anytime son...but it was definitely worth it and I am so glad i went!

One month!
I'm not sure what type of funny story to share with y'all for this week...
this week has been pretty low key but it has been pretty amazing. I have loved it so much! I can say that I'm feeling very much at home, and even though I am not excelling at the language, I am not afraid of it and I've had so much fun just talking to people and going shopping and asking questions...today I went to an outdoor rinok...and I told everyone that I was from Spain because they ahve a concept about Ameircans. It was so funny to have them speak spanish to me!
Other than that, the most exciting thing is that I've bought some tickets to go to an opera (Madame Butterfly), a ballet (Swan Lake), and a concert (Mozart Requiem). I am so excited not only to go to them but becaus they hardly cost me anything! haha...
Russia is great..I thought this week I'd give y'all some pics. So here they are...

Funny story
Here's my message for the week:
On Tuesday I bought some Russian shoes (way cool!) and I've just been wearing them in before I wear them to walk to class or around the city at all. So, Saturday, on the way hoem from class I was getting off the metro at my stop, Mockovskaya, and had a very unfortunate event happen. At this point, I must explain that some metros are d\ouble doors so that there is no way to see into the tracks when the metro is not there...this stop is like that. Once the metro leaves, the doors close. well, there is still a crack, since it is a tunnel, about 5 inches wide maybe, and as I walked over it, my shoe just slipped off. I looked back and my roommate Aubree was still standing in the door. She looked at me and said, "uh, your shoe just totally fell down there." haha...what to do..
the doors closed and I was at a loss. I had one shoe. We finally decided to walk to the eskalator lady at the bottom of the long eskalator...I told her i some great russian that I had lost my shoe. She asked us some questions about where, which door, which side. and then she called soem body. on the phone I caught "yes, some girls are here. they are not russian. I think they are English." and a 2 man crew came to open the doors to help me find my shoe. after the 3rd try, we found it!
lol, I went home with 2 shoes. and I told my landlady what had happened and she said that has never happened to her. awesome.
A day in Russia.

so it's now really hot here! but I love it! we've gone the hermitage, to some cheap rinok (market) and I watched pirates of the carb 3 in russian this morning...waeesome stuff!! so, I wanted to try to put some pictures on this computer, but it doesnn't look like i have a usb drive here...but my brach pres said that he has a burner that I can put all my pictures on a cd with, and then I can use that here, I think...I'm not for sure...I might just have to wait until I get home...or I might have to pay extra for a different cafe. we shall see.
anywho,
I am loving it here even more. I am getitng a little more comfrotable with the language (at least with my landlady and in class) and I am excited to little things that will allow me to learn more...like volunteering at the hermitage...awesome! I cannot wait to be able to do that! that's be so cooll...and hopefully I'd lern so much. and that is such an amazing building! wow...
sos, my landlady picked some random violets and put them in a vase on our ktiched table, and made us come in to look at them. lol because we didn't notice them she was upset...
oh and wait, the babushkas like to chop off branches of trees. lol apparently that's not normal for st. pete's but it is for my area!
at FHE there were more missionaries than members at the beginning...wow I love the church here! and I love my friends! It's such a blast to get together with all of them!
um...my classes are going well. I did well on my first 2 exams...and I wam working so hard...2 months. it's really an ordeal of endurance...cI can go at this pace for 2 months...because then I won't be ABLE to...so I'm making it all count as I can.
well, I have about 10 mins left and I need to try and figure something out with my email...
hope everything is glorious with everybody!!
btw, st. pete's is now 304 yeras old! yup, we had a birthday on sunday and celebrated it with a very strange/advertising parade. but ice cream is YUMMY!

Second Week in Russia
Hey Everybody!!
Wow, I have so so so much to talk abut! I even brough my journal to talk about it all. See, everything that I have experienced, all my memories are now in the past week and youi don't know any of them!!
Mommy called me on Friday and that was a huge relief...I hadn't planned on talking on the phone at all, and was just waiting until today so thta I could email...and then she called. I was a bit overwhelmed, still, and wow..haha,. I did finally get my suitcase! it came at midniht monday night...and man, when you're already asleep and smeone comes into the rroom "vctaite tvoi chemodan zdec" let me tel ya, it's abrupt. lol. but everything was there, they thought my alarm clock was a bomb. lol kind of funny after the fact. Daddy called on sunday, another great surprise, haha, and my landlayd (Zhanna) kept saying that I was talking so fast! lol we laught a LOT at home, and really half my time is spent talking to her. which is great. lastnight her nephew came over from work and he talked with us for aboutr 2 ours. he taught us a lot of slang and we drank kracni chai (tea from flowers) and ate little cookies. so much fun! (the food is great...and we are walking around SO much..no worries) these people have so much patience, most of the time. lol today i went to mail spencer's letter at the post office, and man i stumbl3ed through that process. bu I accomplished it! haha, just gotta get out and do it!
wow, so, where dO i begin? im afraid this WILL be all over the place, plus this keyboard is not quite boriekn in so it's not the easiest thing to type on. nechevo. okay, so the russian is till at time so overwhelming. i have better days and I have worse days. man! last Thursday? I think my gurp went wandering around one of the main streets, nevski prospect, and just looked at some of the amazing museums here!! there's so much history and on saturday we went on an excursion on a bus...and the narrative was in engloish so I understood it all. I've been taking so many pictures but I ,elft my camera cords at my apt, so maybe next week. also, i dunno. anyway, sabout the trip, the ting that sticks out most in my mind (well 2 things) was the visit to this memorial, i forgot what it's called, but it's the memorial where all the people who died during the blockade here (1941--nazis) are buried. it was a mass burial and each day about 5,000 ppl died and cars went around picking them up. they were given...2 kg (?) it hink each day.i.wa s this tiny little piece of bread. and they had in the museum there a jounral from a 13-yr old girl. she wrote each day that someone else in her family had died. an dthen at the end, she wrote "all died. I am alone" It really made me sad and made me think about this city and why I Love it SO much! I mean...learning bout the history...see, st. petersburg was built ad modeled after the european cities becack peter 1 loved europe. so, it doesn't really look like russia to me. I can't wait to go to moscow, novgorod, and hopefully finland. but the mmeorial made me think so much about what i have and what i live on and how sad this time must of been for these people; yet they still lived. they still worked, went to school, and they still survived. that's the russia I love. i love how the language reflects the people and their history so much. and i love learning about the history here it's amazing. Zhanna has talked a little bit about the blockade (she was really little) and I feel frustrated that I cannot communicate with her better about it (we do communicate quite well though. lol it's really hilarious at times)...speaking of language, my best language blunder was sunday. hahahah. okay...
at church one of the bretheren (I'll tlak more about church later) gave a talk (he's american) and he talkec about a break up with is girlfriend. I was tryig to explain this to Zhanna, and when I said "break up" she asked me if I knew what that meant. I said I thought I did...she explained that it means to rip off one's cloths! lol....hahah, we laughed really hard about that. and now, one of my filler sounds is "num-num"...it's so great. i love it and i love her....
the first day of class was icredibly hard. I didn't understand anything, but the second day (yesterday) i sat closer to the teacher so that I could focus on her, and I really felt like I understood more. plus, hearing/readig/speaking russian all the time is amazing practice. it frustrates me when other people in the roup speak english ALL the time. granted, i do slitp into it, probably more often than I would prefer...but I am trying to only speak russian. well, I gues swe ahave different goals. so, yeah, i'm finding that if I don't knwo how to say it in russian, I just dont' say it. I'm a lot quieter here, as a rule actually because the Russians are a ot quieter people. and man the metro! lol it was y first time on the metyro, and it was crazy.! but now it's completely noral. I ride it at least twice every day...it takes me about an hour to get ANYWHERE. I'm really lucky to have everything else near by( grocery store, other stores, park, [i went running with my roommate aubree], post office, fountains...) .i really want to show you some pictures, but I cannoty right now.
Hm, okay quickly about church...it was a 6 hour ordeal. lol, my porgram leaders asked us who wanted to be adventurous, and ofcourse I said I did...so me, my roommate, our friend Rachel, Tim (he served here) and Kevin are going to this ward in a subburb or st. P. ...it's about a 30 min metro ride, then a 30 min bus ride..it's so great! lol. Um, so, we get there, and there are..maybe, 13 people. yup, tiny tiny branch. and it's mostly old grandmas's there's this one 18-yr old girl who just glowed! I want to get to know her so well...and these two other girls, 14 and 12, I think? I want to become their sister! it's so wonderful to be i such a Prixod (branch)...I mean, never have I have anything like this given to me. it's so awesome! so, haha, during relief society all we did was tlk about ourselves and and get to know the old babushkis (5 of the?). oh, and then after church the branch president (senior missionary, there with his wife) came up to me...and asked me if I would be comfortable speakig next week in sacrament meeting. whoa, what! lol, ofcourse I said yes, and i am exictedto prepare. I am actually about as excited as I was last sumer. It's like, I've been studying a lot aout trusting in God and just how and why and what it gives us and the different tangents of it...and that day the closing hymn in sacrament meting had been "I"ll go where you want me to go" and MAN, did that have significance to me. I can't explain all the emotions and comforts and calmness it brough to me sitting there signing it IN russian, IN russia...it was amazing. so I am exicitned to alk. I have not yet gotten a\ny where near ready...15 mins in russian! ah, haha, great! my friend, tim, told me today that it's his fault that I am speaking. he said the branch pres asked him which of us 3 girls spoke the best, and he said me. I told him he's probably not right, but I'm still honored and excited (and nervous) to speak. but the ward is so loving, that I really just want to share with them what I've been learning and how we can apply it...I'm not so much worried about the langauge as commnicating something of importance and use to them. Pray for me and that the spirit will bve with me in my preparation as well as my deliverance!
I only have 20 mins left...how does time go by so fast! and it's already 4.15 here. I am 9 hr ahead of ar...10 from ut...11 frm nevada...haha, i slept for 11 hours when I first got here. I dunno what else to talk about...so many things in my mind and in my thoughts. Iam fudning that I understand more than I can speak. hopefully tha'ts the first step...whew.
So, please know that I love you all so much! Let me know what is going on at ome, if you have time, and Mommy if you could please forward this to spencer...I haven't forgotten him and I am still happy to hear about him. I pray for you all! I love you! Until next week...:-D
Love always, from Russia,
amber

I'M HERE!!....
I am here in St. Petersberg. I have no idea how to express all the sensations and feelings I have been experiencing. I mean, the fights were okay...but even being here for one day, I am feeling so overwhelmed. Just using a computer is a comfort because since I am not talking in English, it is great to be able to type it and read it and think it for once. ahh, it's been so crazy!
We got here yesterday (monday) around 3 and then we waited at the airport for the rest of the group to get in. I made it through customs alright, and then I had everything I needed with me...but my luggage didn't arrive. haha, something had to go wrong, right? well, the girl who was ont he same flight as me didn't receive her luggage either. But they said that it'll come, so I"m hoping for today. I ve been borrowing things from my roommate, Aubree Johnson. So, my host lady, Zxanna Iorcirogvha (?), is so onderful! she is so patient with our languag ein abilities and wants to just show us everything. Chelita (the progrma director from BYU) told us that we are very lucky!! it's so great! I can't believe that I am here. it istll hasn't quite hit me. we went and saw the grocery store, the bank, pharmacy, the metro, the city..the park across the street. we have 3 keys to get into our apartment! a very long one, two smaller ones...5 doors!! haha. it's so so inrecible. I am in awe. and my head hurts immensely. what time is it there? i ahve no idea. i slept for 11 hours. just listening to Russian (zxana) speaks to us all the time, which will be great, but I am in awe right now. How am I going to understand this language? i cannot wait until I go to church, to the mission office, etc. it's going to be so great. it's raining right now: its humid here like in arkansas! and quite cool. it's so nice. and there is no sun: white nights! I can't think, it's so crazy!! lol but I wanted to let you know that I am safe here and I am happy...I have money...it costs 40 rubles for an hour on this computer..haha it took us like 30 mins to find an internet cafe! lol and Zxanna left us and was like, you wont'g et lost will you? lol no we won't. Um, so 40 rubles is about 2 dollars...for one hours..not too bed. I need to exchange more money, but I want to get an idea of prices so I know how much I"ll need for say, a week, or something.
Anyway, I am lucky this keyboard is in English...lol otherwise this would take a really long time...
I don't know what else to say. Wait, my phone number is 726-98-71...with the country code and everything. One other girl in the program said that you can buy phone cards online for cheaper than I can buy them here...and then you can call me. See, our home phone has limited mins when we call out, but anyone can call it. right now it's 12:23 pm...and I think it's like 2 a.m there. it's Tuesday. is it Monday ther? lol I'm so disoriented. my address is...how in English??\

that's the street (a highway), that buliding, and which apartment. we dont' start classes until tomorrow or Thursday, I'm not sure when. I'm so much in a dream...I feel like I want to just sit and wait until I"m ready, but I"ll only get mor ready if I get out there and do something...
i'll probably be on here once a week or so...and somehow I'll figure out how to do pictures...hope everyone is great in America!! I love you all!! :-D
